Chelsea’s good form continues after beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Saint James Park to top the Premier League table on Saturday afternoon.
Federico Fernández’s own goal put the Blues in their path, the Argentine defender hitting the ball over his own line under pressure from Ben Chilwell. Chelsea exuded quality, Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow produced excellent saves to deny excellent Timo Werner, as well as a close-range header from Tammy Abraham.
But Nigerian ancestry secured the points with a clever finish following Werner’s pass after Newcastle United had threatened through Isaac Hayden and Joelinton with Sean Longstaff hitting the bar for the home side towards the end.
Chelsea, who started the day in fifth place, top the table on goal difference ahead of Leicester City, who play in Liverpool on Sunday.
Aston Villa, who host Brighton, could replace Chelsea at the top with a big win, while Tottenham Hotspurs, who host Manchester City later in the evening, will advance to the top with a win.
