Nigeria begins athletes’ camping for Tokyo 2020
The Lagos State Athletics Association will hold a one-day refresher course-seminar for coaches in Lagos State today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has announced that it has made arrangements to start the national camp for its athletes and officials in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games that will take place in 2021.

According to a press release from the sports minister’s media team, the camp exercise is set up for athletes to return to their individual sports that have been on hiatus for so long due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This local camp, which comes with the resumption of sporting activities in Nigeria, is geared towards the early preparation of athletes who have qualified for the Games,” the statement read.

Moving on, the ministry stated that, in conjunction with the Delta State Government, it hosted the Okowa COVID-19 Athletics Resume Meeting in Asaba on November 6, 2020, to test the application of the COVID-19 Sports Code and the Resumption Protocol in a competitive environment. , which was a resounding success paving the way for the reopening of sporting activities in Nigeria.

Taekwondo, rowing and para-rowing, as well as canoeing and para-canoeing, will begin the first phase of their camp in Abuja, while the Para-power powerlifting team will camp in Lagos.

The ministry also announced that other sports federations where athletes have qualified for the Games will begin camping soon after in batches.

As a corollary to this, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in its effort to renew the medium and long distance athletic culture in Nigeria is opening a training camp in Pankshin, Plateau State specifically for road races within this period.

All camps, the reports say, must strictly observe the COVID-19 Sports Code and the Resumption Protocol already developed by the Ministry in training and accommodation venues.
